How are custom patches applied to garments?
There are a few ways patches can be applied, and the best method often depends on the type of garment and patch style. Most commonly, we heat-press patches onto hats and structured garments or sew them onto softer items like toques, beanies, and bags. Heat pressing creates a clean, durable bond with a smooth, professional finish, perfect for headwear and outerwear. Sewing, on the other hand, works better on flexible or curved surfaces where a press might not make full contact.
Customers are welcome to request a specific application method, and our production team will advise on the best practice for your particular garment. Certain fabrics, like heavy canvas or loose-knit toques, respond better to sewing, while others hold perfectly with a professional-grade heat press.
We also offer Velcro backing for removable patches by special request, though it’s typically used for specialty applications such as tactical uniforms or interchangeable branding.
For customers who wish to purchase patches only, we can also supply them with a basic “iron-on” backing upon request. This allows you to apply patches yourself using a home iron or heat press. While DIY application works well for personal projects or small batches, we always recommend our professional heat press process for any branded or retail-quality orders to ensure the best long-term adhesion and finish.
